“This Work then, treats less of Theory than Practice... although I shall offer nothing contrary to sound theory, I do not consider that as my subject; but make it my business to present rational methods of producing useful effects. - In other words to describe these Inventions as connected with immediate Practice” - from the Preface. The detailed descriptions include the adding machine, air pump, lithographic or copperplate press, cotton machine, power wheel (turned by hot air), dynamometer, and some 94 others. In view of the presence of an Adding Machine, it is interesting to note that a Mr. Babbage appears among the subscribers.
