London : Printed by W. Bulmer and W, Nichol, Cleveland-Row, St. James’s. 1821. Large 4to, title-page, 18pp, 8 engraved plates signed “Js. Basire” [ie James Basire II], title slightly dusty and foremargin a little frayed with a small piece missing at lower corner, edges uncut, stab-stitched in original grey sugar-paper wrappers, contemporary ink inscription upper right corner of title, “The Earl of Lonsdale K.G. from his obliged & o...(?) humble ser. The Author”
An early attempt at dealing with very fragile papyri scrolls by using chlorine and iodine in an effort to dissolve whatever substance was holding them rolled up. His methods were only partially successful and it has had to wait for modern X-ray technology to fully solve the problem.
