“Presentation des Leydens-Kampfs Christi am Oelberg No. 39” i.e. Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane.
[Augsburg : Martin Engelbrecht c. 1740/50], 1750. 230 x 185 mm, diorama of 6 leaves and procenium arch, engravings on card cut out and with contemporary hand colouring, contained in a contemporary (?original) wrapper with the German title in ink on the front. The conditon of the prints is “as new” and it seems possible the wrapper, which is certainly contemporary, is that in which they were sold new.
Martin Engelbrecht is known mainly for his peepshows which were exceedingly popular in the first half of the 18th century and for which he obtained an imperial privilege as shown at the foot of each print. He made three different sizes, of which this is the largest.
