Hill, a writer and energetic entrepreneur who was, for a time, stage manager at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, then director of opera at the Queen’s Theatre, Haymarket, died on 8 February 1750, the day before a benefit performance of Merope commanded by the prince of Wales. The play is an adaption from Voltaire.
