In an effort to counteract L’Estrange’s investigations into Titus Oates’ Popish Plot, Oates persuaded Simpson Tonge, who had been arrested for publicly casting doubt on his good faith, to swear falsely that L’Estrange had paid him a hundred guineas to defame Oates and his friends. Despite his acquittal, a storm of public opinion made L’Estrange’s position dangerous and he fled abroad. When he returned in February 1681 he complained that “a whole kennel of libellers was now let loose upon him as if he were to be beaten to death by Pole-Cats”. His defence on this occasion is contained in the present pamphlet.

A translation from the English original (Wing P3416) by the Dean of Norwich. This first edition in French is considerably enhanced by the charming series of spirited etchings, unsigned but in the style of Romeyn de Hooghe, or perhaps his pupil, Adriaan Schoonebeeck.
This romance, set inTurkey, and “plus que galante” was put on the Index by the French police in 1822 and in the same year a considerably expurgated version was published by Octave Uzanne.
It is rare; there is no copy in COPAC and CcFf locates 5 copies only.
